Uptown EVERY Weekend

KUBA board has been collaborating to design turn-key programs which all local businesses and members can participate in, if they choose. Thanks to the support of Ulster County Department of Economic Development and the City of Kingston Mayor’s Office, KUBA is pleased to announce the startup of Uptown EVERY Weekend community campaign and encourages local businesses to participate and join forces to help promote the 2020 Highlights.

Sundays and Suggestions

Open Sundays! Discussions with local government and businesses provided some noteworthy suggestions for Uptown Kingston retail and food service. As you may have noticed, Sundays have become a high-traffic day for Uptown with out-of-town visitors and locals alike. It’s suggested that more shops and restaurants consider being open on Sundays to meet the customer demand.

Tips to consider: Physically have shops and stores front doors open so no one needs to touch handle; When possible create more outside seating and waiting areas; Explore creative ways to bring the great inside energy of your shop to the outside; Place racks outside with your best-selling items; Put more items and visuals in shop windows.

Connecting Community

KUBA recently developed a new website kuba.network which includes Uptown news updates, a community calendar, links for safety guidelines and local happenings and much more. Special thanks to local photographers for contributions: Bentley Potter, Kevin Godbey, Veronica Fassbender and many more.

In order to keep communication flowing between KUBA, the City of Kingston, Ulster County Department of Economic Development and Uptown businesses, we now include members and non-members in our email correspondence. If you would like to be added please subscribe to our mailing list at kuba.network. All are encouraged to visit, connect and collaborate with kuba.network growing website and social media platforms.

Big thanks to Ulster Savings Bank for generously financing Raleigh Green Inc's “Uptown Kingston is Open” campaign that started July 2, 2020 and ran for 8 weeks. Efforts included radio, print and social media advertising and helped promote the safe reopening of Kingston businesses.

Pointing the way! Working with the upcoming format of City of Kingston’s Wayfinders signage program, KUBA is pleased to have developed and installed a new directional sign at the corner of Washington Avenue and N. Front Street.

Keeping it clean! In an effort to keep our historic district looking its best, KUBA hired Walter Relyea to pull weeds growing by the street signs, park benches, curbs and Pike Plan pillars. If you see Walter on the sidewalks, please say hello.

Help from our friends! The YMCA Farm Kids were also instrumental in volunteering their time to improve our streetscapes. They took on the overwhelming task of weeding the two Bioswales areas next to the public parking lots. In appreciation, Dietz Stadium Diner bought lunch for all the kids. According to Susan Heath, Education Director, many folks stopped and thanked the crew throughout the day.

Trash can plan! For years KUBA has been requesting additional city trash cans for the Uptown streets with no luck. As more visitors and locals fill our sidewalks the need for trash receptacle has increased. With limited receptacles trash cans are overflowing and debris ends up on the ground. At this point, the KUBA board has decided to launch a fundraising campaign to invest in additional 36-gallon steel trash receptacles for our community.

Lighting the way! As we plan for the upcoming holiday season, KUBA is hoping to continue to expand and improve upon our holiday décor and consulting with local lighting specialists for estimates.

At this time KUBA has waived renewal membership fees to any business that is experiencing hardships and needs to request a hold on their membership. Currently KUBA has approximately 100 members. Our goal is to get more people involved so we encourage you to attend our next monthly meeting.

Come say hello! KUBA meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month from 8:30-10:00 at the Best Western Plus. However, until further notice they are being conducted on Zoom. Please check our calendar for updates. We hope to see you soon.

100% of annual membership dues goes back into our community though beautification, programming and civic outreach including Kingston O+ Positive, Kingston Farmers Market, Kingston Clean Sweep, Antique Fire Engine Muster and Snowflake Festival. For more membership information please visit kuba.network.
